Chapter 17

Something kept tapping my cheek. I opened one eye to see our gray kitten, whacking my face with his paw. I glanced at the clock. The alarm would go off in ten minutes. I glared at the fur ball, pushed him away, and settled in for a little more pillow time.

The cat started to return, but I flipped the covers, bouncing him back where he’d been. When the alarm rang, I grabbed him to carry downstairs. Keon trailed behind me, the calico pressed to his chest. Putting the gray menace down, I went straight to the coffee pot to pour myself a cup. I poured one for Keon, too, and we settled next to each other at the kitchen island. The gray kitten pranced around my stool, meowing.

“That cat’s relentless when he’s hungry.” Keon reached for an apple from the fruit bowl.

I got up and went to the laundry room to scoop out their dry food. Both kittens dug in. Then I returned to finish my coffee.

“We need to name them.” Keon watched them through the open door.

I’d been trying to think of something original, but was coming up blank—a sorry situation. A writer who couldn’t think of a good cat name. “Smokey for the gray cat?”

“Everyone comes up with names like that.” He tilted his head, thinking. “Maybe we should name them for their personalities, not their colors.”

“Then we’d call the gray cat Brat and the calico Pouncy.”

He grinned. “I like Pouncy. It suits her.”

“Brat suits the gray cat, too,” I pointed out.

He shook his head. “That can be his nickname, but I’m not naming a cat Brat. What about Gourmand? He has good taste. He picked us as owners.”

I watched the cat push his friend out of the way so that he could finish the last bites in the bowl. “What about Grub?” I asked.

Keon chuckled and nodded. “It’s better than Oinky.”

I reached for the bag of cat toys we’d bought and threw two stuffed mice across the kitchen floor. The kittens ran to catch them.

“You hungry?” Keon asked. “Ready for breakfast?”

“Only half a bagel for me,” I told him. “I’m still full from the chimichanga last night.”

We ate quickly, then he took off on his morning run. I went in the basement to work out on my machines. He hit the shower before I did to get ready for the day.

“I have to zip into work for an hour or two.” He was wearing his faded jeans and a T-shirt. If he dressed like that to cook, women would try to order him off the menu.

“I’m writing all day.” I filled my cup with the last of the coffee to head to my office. Keon gave me a peck on the cheek when he left, and I started arranging words on paper. I still needed more research for the article, but I had enough to get a feel for how I wanted to present facts. Writing demanded my total concentration, and I was off in my zone when Tyson called.
